Penrith's most spectacular visitor attraction, Rheged Discovery Centre, dedicates itself to "a celebration of 2000 years of Cumbria's history, mystery and magic - as never seen before".

Open all year round, the Centre is housed in the largest earth-covered building in Europe, and is carefully designed to blend harmoniously with the surrounding fells. Although it is built on 7 levels, from the outside Rheged looks like just another Lakeland hill. Inside, babbling brooks and massive limestone crags replicate the Cumbrian landscape but the centrepiece is a 6-storey high, giant cinema screen, 60 feet wide and 48 feet high, showing up to 5 spectacular movies daily.

Only a couple of minutes drive from Exit 40 of the M6, Rheged also offers visitors a permanent National Mountaineering Exhibition, 12 carefully selected shops, restaurants, children's indoor play area, gateway tourist information centre with regular daytime and evening events.
