The picturesque village of Greystoke, long known for being the ancestral home of Tarzan, is situated about 5 miles west of Penrith on the B5288 and it is here you can find The Boot & Shoe. This former coaching inn and post house is now over 400 years old and has seen many tenants over its long history. The latest tenants, Jan and Ban Mandale have been the proprietors for 2 years and the premises are doing a roaring trade. The stone building has planters and hanging baskets littered around the exterior giving bursts of colour and giving a great first impression. The interior is much the same, wrought iron furniture and a large inglenook fireplace promote the warm welcome received as you enter the place. The bar is very well stocked, open all day every day, there are three real ales on offer, Black Sheep as well as two rotating guest ales, normally from local brewers if possible. A major draw to the establishment is the food, available between 12 noon and 3 pm and 6 pm to 9 pm daily, the menu consists of classic British pub fare, cooked extremely well using the best of local produce. The Boot & Shoe also offers accommodation in the form of four en suite rooms; the reasonable tariff includes a breakfast. |
