The origin of Great Urswick is said to be around 1120, when King Alfred was on the throne of England, whilst the history of The General Burgoyne is somewhat shorter, there are still some tales to be told. The pub is believed to have been built at the beginning of the 17th century and several stories have been told as to how the name came about. The most common and probably the most believable, is that a soldier who fought in the U.S. War of Independence with the General came home from battle and decided to name the public house in his honour. It is certainly a unique name; there is no other pub in the UK with the same name. The interior is warm, comfortable and functional; the bar area boasts old stone flag floors, wooden beams showing and long benches which get pretty full during the popular quiz nights! Anyone can enter the "Our Survey Said" quiz held on Sunday nights every week. The bar is extremely well stocked and there are always three real ales on offer; Hartleys XB is the regular and there are two rotating Robinson Brewery guest ales. The main draw to this great pub however, is the excellent food; the menu consists of pub classics, cooked fresh to order, with locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. The Lake District contains several magnificent food suppliers and the General Burgoyne specialises in utilising in season foods in daily specials, one popular example is the superb Game Pie. The main menu is typified by these scrumptious choices; home made mince and onion pie, local rare breed sausage, topped with a red onion marmalade, and a massive 16oz T-bone steak. Another favourite of the menu is the General Burgoyne's Pie, Peas and Gravy for just £3.75! Food is served Monday to Friday 12 pm to 2 pm and 6 pm to 9pm, Saturday 12 pm to 9 pm and from 12 pm to 4 pm and 6 pm up 8.30 pm on Sunday. Because of the popular nature of the restaurant, it is necessary to make a reservation to dine on Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday lunchtimes. The General Burgoyne also has special offers on; Tuesday nights are curry nights, where you can eat as much as you can for a special price. Thursday's are 2 for 1 on the main courses. There is off road parking and disabled access. |
