With six pubs a day in the UK closing their doors, the traditional British hostelry has never been under greater threat. So, when the villagers of Grizebeck heard that their local was due to close in January 2009, the villagers decided to do something about it. Fortunately, the then licensees of the Greyhound had responded to an advert in the Publican from a film company looking for struggling pubs. The process of re-establishing the pub was long and involved but the efforts of local people bore fruition and on January 21st, 2009 the inn re-opened as The Greyhound Community Pub, staffed and run by village volunteers.

It already has a reputation for good home-made food and well-kept beers, including several real ales one of which, New Beginnings, is specially brewed for the pub.

The community involvement is strengthened by a monthly quiz night, an acoustic music night and there are also Saturday walks from the Greyhound leaving at 10am and back in time for lunch. The inn also offers comfortable en suite rooms. All in all, an inspiring example for others whose local is under threat.
