Set in idyllic surroundings in the grounds of historic Furness Abbey, the Abbey Mill Coffee Shop occupies what used to be the Abbot's cottage, a listed building of great character and charm with beams that have been dated to the 13th century. Owned and run by Jackie Baxter and her family, this unique café is a place to savour.Outside, customers at the picnic tables enjoy a peaceful pastoral scene of open grassland and woodland, an ideal place for children to play. Inside, the menu offers a good choice of appetising food, starting with a full English breakfast (or its vegetarian alternative) and continuing with an inviting selection of dishes such as home-made soup, oven-baked jacket potatoes, ploughman's, paninis and freshly prepared sandwiches. In addition to the regular menu, there are daily specials listed on the blackboard and also a separate children's menu. And you should certainly not leave without sampling one of the delicious home-made cakes. The café seats 25 inside and many more outside. It is open from 11am to 5pm, daily in summer; and from 11am to 5pm, Wednesday to Sunday in winter. |
