Still one of the favourite destinations in Cumbria for food, drink and holiday accommodation, overlooking the village of Coniston lies the unbeatable Sun Coniston.

Built in 1902 by the local brewery, a hotel extension was added over 100 years ago when the railway came in 1859. The railway has since left, however The Sun still remains and is visited from far and wide, by those wishing to experience great ales, food, accommodation and top quality hospitality.

Alan and Sharon Piper have been the owners here for the last 9 years and although having left the premises in the mid 2000's in the hands of staff, they are now back in charge and the property is becoming more and more popular on a daily basis, with locals and regulars galore.

The building is wonderful and offers a unique mix of four-star inn accommodation, conservatory restaurant, great pub and a tremendous comfortable and informal atmosphere, which is enjoyed by all who visit. Many of the original features of the property remain, including the wooden beams and roaring fireplaces and other traditional elements have been added such as the stone flooring in the bar and the beautifully provincial décor in the bedrooms. The restaurant is a beautiful accompaniment to the rest of the property, in a conservatory, surrounded by luscious greenery and beautiful views. This room is also airy with natural light, which is simply divine in fair weather.

The restaurant doesn't serve trendy food with fancy names, just good, honest, quality food that offers great taste and value. All of the meals are freshly prepared utilising the finest local ingredients, which are used in dishes such as braised shank lamb, local beef and ale pie, fish and chips and cured loin of pork glazed in a honey cherry jam. There is also an extensive wine list, over 35 wines and a whopping 8 real ales- with bluebird, hawkshead and copper dragon being the regulars, plus rotating guests, predominantly from local breweries.

The accommodation is a great end to the day at The Sun Coniston. Families with children and pets are very welcome here and the 8 ensuite bedrooms, include 3 family rooms. The tariffs are excellent value and include 5 cooked breakfast options to help you get the day off to the best of starts.
