This beautifully quaint café-restaurant is situated in a station building on the north platform on the Settle-Carlisle line. Brief Encounter is run by Gordon and Elsie Edgar, a couple passionate about maintaining the wholesome traditional flair of times past; something you can really taste in their homemade jams, preserves, own label biscuits and confectionary all available to buy on the premises.

A great range of award winning light lunches and evening meals (traditional roast available on Sundays) are served using certificated Cumbria-sourced produce. Who could resist the mouth-watering steak & ale pie, made with Newcastle Brown Ale? Or why not just drop in for a morning coffee or afternoon tea to soak up the atmosphere, which is as elegant and romantic as the 1945 film "Brief Encounter" gains its name from. Opening times are Apr-Oct (7days) 9am-5pm Nov-Mar 10am-4pm (closed Mondays), it is advisable to book, particularly in the busy seasons and for larger groups. A delicious takeaway service is available all year on Wednesdays 4:30pm-7pm.

Adjacent to Brief Encounter is a lovely craft and gift shop, which would complete any trip to this superb dining establishment. This is the perfect place to get that special gift for someone else, or for yourself. Opening times are Thurs pm and Fri-Sun 10am-4pm.
