In the picturesque village of Great Salkeld, among pleasant 18th century cottages and farmhouses in red sandstone in the lush pastures of the Eden Valley, sits the Highland Drove Inn, a place renowned for its cosy traditional atmosphere, delicious food and great hospitality. The Highland Drove has hundreds of years of hospitality behind it, which father and son Donald and Paul Newton, have been consistently upholding since 1998.

The great food is at the real heart of the Highland Drove Inn; favourites such as haddock & chips, Ploughman's and steak and ale pie are served alongside such creative mouth-watering dishes as Nile Perch on stir-fried vegetables with mussels and a creamy curry sauce. For a light bite or quick early evening meal Downstairs at the Drove offers a reduced menu of good hearty pub food, with all the style of Kyoles chefs. Opening hours for serving food are Tuesday to Friday (and also Sunday) lunchtime 12-2:30pm, evening meal 6- 9pm. On Saturdays they are open all day but only serve food within these hours and on Mondays the Highland Drove is not open for lunch, but is for the evening meal. Also, if you are reluctant to leave the cosy atmosphere, there are several rooms available, all of which are en-suite and have that same snug traditional quality as the rest of the Inn.

Also run by Donald and Paul is The Cross Keys; a short drive from Penrith on the A686, in the nearby village of Carleton. Both of these premises now come under the name of Kyoles Inns, which, as described by them, is "named after the highland cattle from the Western Isles that were driven across the narrow Kyles to the mainland, (and) has become a byword for innovative and high quality food." This is something that The Cross Keys has in abundance, fuelled by the popularity of The Highland Drove, the fine food and ales on offer in this beautifully fully-refurbished establishment have already forged a reputation among locals and visitors since its open in Dec '08.

Dishes such as the locally sourced Cumbrian lamb hot pot with braised red cabbage or the "Kyloes" 16oz T-bone steak (not for the meat-shy!) can be enjoyed Mon - Sat 12noon to 2:30 and 5:30 to 9pm and Sun 12noon to 2:30 and 6 to 8:30pm. For nice weather there is a balcony leading off of the main dining area, where you can dine outside and enjoy the superb views.
