Chofh's Tearoom and Takeway

New Road, Brough, Cumbria CA17 4AS

Tel: 01768 342800

Hidden away just yards from the busy A66 on the edge of the centre road to Brough is Chofh's Tearoom and Takeaway, a hotspot for hungry cyclists, walkers and tourists and is of course well loved by the locals. Chofh's has been a well established tearoom in Brough for many years now, current owner Jennie Dawson had worked here for 3 years when she fell in love with the place and bought it for herself and husband John.

It's clean and friendly country décor aids the feeling of traditional tearooms, and lives up to standards serving a quality range of homemade cakes. There is room for 22 people to dine inside and room for 8 more outside, with a choice from a delicious locally produced menu and daily specials board, though the specialties are Jennie's famous bacon sandwiches and filling all day breakfasts - perfect to keep you going all day on your trip around the scenic area of Brough.

Brough is set on the ancient Roman site of the fort of Verteris, on the road that used to be the Roman gateway across country, and is filled with some interesting historical buildings, including St Michael's Castle dating back to Norman times and Brough castle built in the 11th century. If history isn't what interests you however, there is plenty to attract those looking for a country ramble, as the area surrounding Brough is filled with enchanting walks along beautiful stretches of old railway lines, some of which even take a wander to the local nature reserve. Chofh's makes the perfect start for such a day.

Chofh's is open Monday-Friday 7.30am to 4pm and Saturday 8:30am-3pm, but in the summer months on Thursdays doors are open right through until 8:30pm. Closed on Sundays. Booking is advised for larger parties as Chofh's is a local favourite, and seats can fill up fast. Cash only please.

And if your after more than just tea and a scrumptious Cumbrian snack, you might be interested in John's other talents which include being local toastmaster and master of ceremonies, available to book for weddings, private parties, corporate functions, charity auctions or commentating!
