The Wheatsheaf is a great inn situated amongst some stunning scenery in the Lake District. Set in the quaint village of Embleton, home to around 300 people, the pub is within easy reach of the A66 and the nearby town of Cockermouth. From the pub, excellent views of the surrounding countryside can be admired, the Cumbrian hills creating a magnificent backdrop for this establishment. The premises are clean and welcoming on approach, the white walls are set off by the black framed windows and a little wooden porch provides a wonderful entrance. Mother and son team Evelyn and Jonathon Hill took control of the Wheatsheaf in December 2008 and have 7 years experience in the hospitality industry. On arrival, they set about improving this already good inn, a complete refurbishment was the result and the premises are now in a superb condition. As a result of the refurbishment, the interior is just as nice as you would expect with comfortable dining areas in well decorated surroundings. The bar is very well stocked and hosts 2 to 3 real ales at any one time; Jennings Bitter and Cumberland Ale are favourites among the friendly locals. The pub is open every evening Sunday to Saturday and for lunchtimes on Saturday and Sunday. The Wheatsheaf serves food every evening between 6 pm and 9 pm and between 12 pm and 2 pm on Saturday and Sunday lunchtimes.Due to the popular nature of the restaurant, it is essential to make a reservation to dine on Saturday evening or Sunday lunchtime to avoid disappointment. Evelyn and Jonathon employ professional chefs to cook all the food to order, all the ingredients are sourced within Cumbria where possible and as tantalising as the menu is, there is even a daily specials board to choose from. The menu is composed of good old classic pub fare, cooked to perfection by the professional chefs. Examples of the great menu are wholetail Whitby scampi, served with home made chips, garden peas, tartare sauce and a dressed salad; local Cumberland sausage, served with fried egg and onion rings and, not to be missed, the home made steak and ale pie with home made chips. For those lucky enough to visit on Sunday, there is a choice of local beef or leg of lamb roasts with all the accoutrements! |
