One that may be easily missed, but definitely worth the journey is the White Horse Inn. Situated just off the A66 the White Horse Inn is located at Scales and has beautiful surroundings. Dating back to 1610, the building has character, style and charm, equally traditional, historical and with a hint of modernism, brought about by the new tenants. Starting off life as a farmhouse and then alehouse, eventually becoming an inn in the early 18th century, the property was once a meeting pace for highway men and smugglers; today times have changed, but the social hub of the inn is still the same, with locals and tourists gathering to enjoy a real ale or two in a pleasant and warm environment.

Barry and Katy McGeachy, along with business partner Matthew Hall, bar supervisor Philip and head Chef Mike took over the reins here in March 2009 and already the recommendations for quality hospitality and service are arriving by word of mouth and by the number of customers returning time and time again. All of the aforementioned names in the team have past experience in licensing or catering and are like family, all getting on very well with one another.

Open every session and all day Saturday and Sunday there are 3 real ales to enjoy, Camerons Strongarm being the regular, with two rotating guest ales on offer. Food is also available, being a massive part of the inn's business. Served daily from 12-3pm and 6-9pm, with bar snacks being served all day Saturday and Sunday as an extra, head Chef Mike produces quality cuisine, using local produce and local suppliers wherever possible; however prime Aberdeen Angus beef is always used.

Snacks see nachos, homemade chips and bacon or sausage baps on the menu, whereas for lunch you may fancy a breakfast bun, white horse burger or venison pasty, all of which are served with homemade chips, providing great value for money. Throughout the evening there is a fabulous hot and spicy pork steak on offer, as well as Cumberland pie, which is black pudding and lamb in a hand made pie and grilled salmon fillet with a lemon sauce. Food can be eaten throughout the inn, creating a warm and sociable atmosphere and children are more than welcome, meaning that the White Horse Inn is great for families.
