In their mid-Victorian hotel at the foot of the main street, hospitable owners Guy and Helen Harmer provide a warm family welcome to all their patrons. The Cumberland Hotel is a place of wide appeal where visitors arrive as guests and leave as friends. It offers a convivial spot to meet for a drink, a fine choice for a meal at any time of day and a comfortable base for both leisure and business visitors. In the two licensed bars, four real ales, including Yates Bitter and guest local brews, can be enjoyed over a chat, and when the sun shines the patio is a pleasant alternative; this area overlooks the quoits pitch, used by the players in the summer local league.

Guy prides himself on using the best local produce in his dishes and uses local suppliers to assure his food is as fresh as it can be. Dishes such as chicken & mushroom pie, steak & ale pie, minced beef & thyme dumpling and homemade pork mince lasagne adorn the menu, and can be enjoyed daily between noon and 9 in the evening. Booking is recommended on Saturday evenings and Sunday lunchtimes. The hotel is a popular venue for birthday parties and other special occasions. The accommodation comprises five well-appointed rooms, all en suite, sleeping up to 14 in total; they can be block-booked for families or groups of friends.

Alston is an important centre at a major crossroads, and numerous visitor attractions are within easy reach, including the Gossipgate gallery in town, the Nenthead Mines Heritage Centre, Ashgill Force Waterfall, the Pennine Way and Hartside Pass with views of the fells and Solway Firth.
