The pretty village of Newton Reigny, a couple of miles west of Penrith, is home to the marvellous Sun Inn, a popular, traditional free house dating from the 17th century. Tenants Adrian and Carolyne Stevenson-Jones took over here in January 2007, moving from a public house in Glasson Dock. With over 34 years of joint experience in the trade, tenants Keith and Liz decided that The Sun Inn should be their next venture and took over the premises in 2007. With so much experience and knowledge of the trade, it comes as no surprise that this inn is such a popular choice for visitors and locals alike.Open all day everyday, food is served from 7am through to 10pm, and Liz prepares traditional pub food with a modern twist. Using locally sourced produce as much as possible, Liz has created a menu that offers something for everyone; with lemon sole, daubes of beef, venison steak, stuffed chicken, nutters steak pie and vegetarian chilli being just a few of the options. The bar offers the usual selection of hot and cold drinks as well as three real ales from the Thwaites brewery range, Wainwrights Bitter being the regular. A garden at the back of the inn runs down to a picturesque stream, providing a very pleasant spot in the summer months. The Sun is not only a delightful place for a drink and a meal, it's also the perfect base to relax, unwind and discover all the attractions of the region. The accommodation comprises 5 well appointed upstairs rooms, four of them with en suite facilities and one of them a family room with its own private bathroom. Children are very welcome, and the inn can cater for private functions and parties - even a dance floor is available. A quiz night is held every Wednesday from 9pm and all are welcome to join in the fun.The scenery hereabouts is truly beautiful, and the inn itself is as pretty as a picture in the summer, when the award-winning gardens and hanging baskets are in full bloom. Penrith is close by and the Lake District National Park is on the doorstep. Ullswater is six miles away, and other places to visit include Aira Force Waterfall, Whinlatter Forest Park, Dove Cottage, Eden Ostrich World and Trotters Wold of Animals. This is also excellent walking country, and golf, riding, pony trekking and fishing are all available nearby. |
