Dating back to the early 1900s, the Sydney House, is a beautiful and comfortable guest house, which has been lovingly furnished. Located in rural Devon it is owned by former farmers Rosemary and Richard Wedlake, who were both born and bred in the county. The Sydney House welcomes customers from all walks of life and it is often popular with walkers and cyclists. There are three bedrooms (two doubles and one single) at the Sydney House, all which have their own private bathroom. There is also a self-catering cottage, which sleeps 5/6 people. It has all the modern necessities and as well as gas central heating has Egyptian cotton sheets and electric blankets. For those wanting to visit the Sydney House for something to eat you are unlikely to be disappointed. The menu is varied and the ingredients for all of the dishes served are sourced locally creating quality, fresh dishes. Starters include pork and duck liver pate; prawn and cress mayonnaise; egg mayonnaise and apricots; garlic mushrooms; and potato and leek soup. All of the starters are served with white or brown bread and butter. Among the most popular dishes on the main menu are fresh rolled sliced ham or beef filled with fruit; cutlet of fresh salmon; poached haddock; leek and cream pie (with a pastry top); and vegetable flan (mushrooms, peppers, cheese and egg). It is definitely advisable for diners to leave room for one of Rosie's tempting desserts. Chocolate sponge gateaux filled with pears and cream; sponge gateaux filled with strawberry or raspberry; blackberry and apple pie with cream; and sherry and fruit sponge trifle are among the favourites. Coffee or tea, and cheese and biscuits can be ordered to complete the meal and there is a good range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to wash it down. The B&B and self catering cottage are open all year round and there is plenty to entertain visitors to Devon. There are plenty of activities to take part in, including riding, fly fishing and golf. The scenery is absolutely superb and there are some wonderful rural views to be enjoyed. The area is fantastic for walking with the moor on one side and the coastline on the other. The cottage is suitable for disabled visitors and there is a ground floor ensuite B&B room available. Ring for further details. |
