Lowestoft Maritime Museum

Sparrows Nest Park, Whapload Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk NR32 1XG

Tel: 01502 561963

Anyone with an interest in the sea and ships should steer a steady course for Britain's most easterly museum under the lighthouse on Whapload Road. Open daily from May to September, Lowestoft Maritime Museum specialises in the history of the Lowestoft fishing fleet, from early sail to steam and through to the modern diesel-powered vessels.

Methods of fishing are recorded, including trawling and the no longer practised driftnet fishing for herring, and other displays depict the evolution of lifeboats and the town's association with the Royal Navy. A replica of the aft cabin of a steam drifter and a fine picture gallery are other attractions of this fascinating museum, where the attendants are ex-seamen and others interested in the port of Lowestoft. They are all delighted to answer any questions visitors have about the Museum and its exhibits. School parties are particularly welcome, with takeaway educational packs available, and out-of-season parties can be catered for with notice.

The Museum, which is maintained by members of the Lowestoft and East Suffolk Maritime Society, was established in 1968 and extended in 1978, when the Duke of Edinburgh was guest of honour. The objects of the Society are to educate the public in shipping, old and modern, in Lowestoft and the County of Suffolk, and in trades and crafts associated with shipping lore in general and in particular to maintain the Museum.
