Set in the heart of the Norfolk Broads, Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden is one of the county's best kept secrets. Boasting the UK's finest naturalised collection of Candelabra primulas, a 950 year old Oak Tree (home to a family of ducks), and 130 acres of natural woodland and water garden. The garden was developed by the late 2nd Lord Fairhaven Major Henry Broughton, who bought South Walsham Estate in 1946. The estate had been used as a convalescence home for officers during the Second World War, and so the garden had become a jungle. The site was gradually cleared by hand and took 15 years to complete. Lord Fairhaven then set about planting the garden with shade and water loving plants including Camellias and Rhododendrons specially imported from the Himalayas.Whether you choose to visit in the height of summer, or in the depths of winter there is always something to see. |
