Norfolk's longest narrow gauge heritage railway is a 15" gauge line operating between the old market town of Aylsham and Wroxham, a distance of nine miles. The Bure Valley Narrow Gauge Railway was opened in July 1990 with new station buildings and workshops at Aylsham and a new station adjacent to Hoveton and Wroxham station. The railway is operated primarily by steam locomotives, of which there are four. Passengers are carried in 22 fully enclosed and luxuriously upholstered coaches. Two wheelchair accessible coaches can each carry four wheelchairs with their carers. The journey time is 45 minutes.

At Aylsham the workshops are usually open to visitors; on site are a small museum and model railway, a well-stocked gift shop and the Whistlestop Restaurant open for full English breakfasts, lunch and high tea. A shop selling confectionery and drinks is located at Wroxham station. There is ample free car and coach parking at both stations, with fully equipped facilities for disabled visitors.

The Bure Valley Railway specialises in joint operations with other attractions. There is a regular boat train facility from Aylsham connecting with cruises on the Broads from Wroxham. In off-peak periods the railway operates Steam Locomotive Driving Courses for beginners and the more experienced. The Bure Valley Railway operates regular services from April to October, Santa Specials towards Christmas and Day out with Thomas the Tank Engine events in May and September. The Railway is paralleled along its whole length by the scenic Bure Valley Walk and cycle path.
