Advertising itself as a 'Restaurant with rooms', The Starr manages to supply warm and comfortable accommodation along with simply stunning food to create a memorable dining experience. This timber built 15th century inn is owned and run by Terry and Louise George, who have been in the local area for more than 25 years, they are therefore well placed to provide expert guidance on local attractions and points of interest. The knowledge gained over the years includes a good understanding with suppliers; the George's are able to ensure that only the best of local produce is delivered and used by the excellent chefs.Set in the bustling market place of Great Dunmow, The Starr is a traditional looking building complete with quaintly uneven walls and a black and white paint job set off nicely by the many colourful window boxes. Inside is just as full of charm, with plenty of exposed beams and uneven ceilings throughout the dining areas and into the bedrooms. The main buildings holds the dining area and the conference rooms whilst there is an old stable block to the rear which has been tastefully renovated into accommodation. Eight individually decorated rooms are available for hire and each have their own selling points; the Pine room has a corner bath with his and her marble washbasins, and the Oak room boasts a four poster bed and a free standing Victorian bath. Other options include the Blue room, the Poppy room and the Brass room; you are sure to find a purely individual room unlike any standardised hotel chain.Serving food from Tuesday to Sunday lunchtime, the restaurant has several a la carte menus with a variety of mouth watering options; during the week there is the standard luncheon menu or a set 3 course market lunches for just £19.50. The Starr also offers a 5 course tasting menu alongside the dinner menu, which is perfect for a group who are just a little peckish. Sunday is a more traditional lunch with a choice of 7 or 8 starters and main courses. For any with dietary requirements, the chef team are more than happy to cater for specific needs. There are also two conference rooms that can be used for that important business meeting or special occasion; the Oak room is slightly smaller than the Market room, although both can be used simultaneously. |
