Built in the 1800's, this smart building sets the scene for this extremely popular and high quality inn; oozing charm and character as you approach, the large sash windows and pitched roof create a good impression that doesn't go away. Burnham on Crouch is a lovely modern and contemporary town and The Oyster Smack fits in perfectly amongst the friendly streets, impressive townhouses and the busy yacht marina. The Oyster Smack is owned and run by Trevor Howell; a professional chef who trained at Westminster College whose CV includes working with Jamie Oliver in his first restaurant and at Gordon Ramsey's 3 Michelin star winning establishment as a pastry chef.

Inside the newly refurbished dining room is decorated to perfection, classy and timeless, the neutral decor provides a brilliant backdrop to this truly special dining experience. Wooden floors, high quality furniture and linen tablecloths all create an elegant feeling that has the Oyster Smack's reputation increasing every week. Accommodation takes the form of nine en suite rooms, all individually and expertly decorated and guaranteed to provide a warm and comfortable night's sleep. Reasonably priced, the tariff includes a fine breakfast in the mornings and the long running, and at quiet times there is a popular, special offer for dinner, bed and breakfast.

As you would expect from a place where the owner has such a good chef pedigree, the food at the Oyster Smack is spectacular; whether you are just popping in for a snack or a full three course meal as a special occasion. The bar menu features those pub classics that everybody loves; ham, egg and chips, liver and bacon on mash and battered fish and chips are just a few examples. The coastal location means that Trevor can take full advantage of fresh seafood and the Galley restaurant menu utilises these to full effect. Sumptuous examples include monkfish wrapped in pancetta, fillet of sea bass on creamed leeks and market fish of the day accompanied by seasonal garnish. Describing the menu as the best of modern British food, Trevor sources the finest of local ingredients to provide the a la carte menu that has put the Oyster Smack on the map.
