Coggeshall is one of those ancient market towns that are just steeped in history, with old, pretty buildings lining the streets and monuments still standing from bygone ages, The Clockhouse is one such monument, standing proudly overlooking Coggeshall's market suare. Although the actual business is relatively new, the grade II building in which it is situated has a long and varied story. Originally built in the 14th century, this unique blue and white clock tower was rebuilt in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria's jubilee and was once used as a school for the poor children of the town. Approaching the cafe gives you time to admire the large bay window that floods the tea room with light and the quaintly wonky front door.Inside is equally special; there isn't a straight wall in the place and the exposed beams with the wooden floors create a warm and cosy feeling as you are welcomed by the friendly and convivial staff. None of the furniture matches, all of the wooden tables and chairs have been chosen completely at random, as well as all of the tea cups and tea pots, but this only serves to enhance the charm. While it is a joy to sit inside, during the warmer months it is possible to sit outside, watch the world go by and enjoy a cup of Earl Grey.Alongside the large range of teas and coffees, The Clockhouse has built up a fine reputation for good food and serves a huge selection of breakfasts, cakes, scones, and various hot meals. All of the food is cooked fresh to order using only the finest of locally sourced ingredients and in tried and tested recipes. Extremely popular is the extensive dessert menu, which features among many others; hot chocolate cake with ice cream, apple crumble and various cakes.A new development at The Clockhouse is the recently created accommodation; comprising two en suite rooms, guests will be able to appreciate the fine antique and speciality shops in Coggeshall for longer by enjoying a comfortable night's sleep. |
