Although the manor here was mentioned in the Domesday Book, the present Chambercombe Manor was not built until the 12th century and it still retains much of its medieval charm and character today. When, exactly, it fell from being a manor house to a farmhouse is unknown but fortunately such features as its plaster frieze and barrel ceiling in the bedrooms can still be seen. Displaying period furniture from Elizabethan times up to the Victorian era, this is a delightful house that allows visitors to soak up the atmosphere of what was also a family home. Along with the Great Hall, there is the private chapel of the Champernon family, the manor's first owners, an old kitchen and the Coat of Arms bedroom that was once occupied by Lady Jane Grey and it is the Grey coat of arms, who were descendants of the Champernons, that is depicted above the fireplace.Meanwhile, outside there is a paved courtyard, with ornamental ponds, a delightful garden of lawns, shrubbery and herbaceous borders, and a water garden beyond which lie the extensive grounds that take in the peaceful, secluded wooded valley in which the manor house is situated. |
