The South Peak Estate lying within what is called the White Peak area of the Peak District extends to approximately 4,000 acres. Located to the north of the market town of Ashboume the main bulk of the estate is located within the two river valleys of the Dove and Manifold. Within the property are popular visitor attractions such as Dovedale and Ham Park.The Estate is centred on Ham Park which contains Ham Hall (now a Youth Hostel), together with the National Trust's visitor facilities. To the north-west lies the Hamps and Manifold Valleys and to the north- east lies Dovedale stretching 7 miles to the north towards Hartington. Some of the finest Peak District limestone grasslands and dales woodland lie within these two valleys under Trust management which are soon to be designated as Special Areas of Conservation under European leglislation. Access to the estate is available to the public all year round and visitor numbers are very high with an estimated 2 million visitors a year to Dovedale alone. |
