Heage Windmill stands in a very striking position overlooking the village of Nether Heage. A Grade 11* listed building, she is the only working, stone-towered windmill with six sails in England and the only working windmill in Derbyshire. She started grinding corn in 1797 and prior to her restoration, was last worked by miller, Thomas Shore in 1919.The mill has much of her old wooden mechanism in place which drives one of her two pairs of millstones. Work is in hand to enable the mill to produce flour again in the near future. In the basement, the interpretation centre tells the story of Heage Windmill. The adjacent kiln has been restored as a reception centre with toilets and a shop selling flour, souvenirs and refreshments. There is wheelchair access to the ground floor of the windmill, the interpretation centre and the reception centre. There is a large car park on site. |
