Castle Drogo (National Trust) is spectacularly sited on a rocky outcrop with commanding views out over Dartmoor and the Teign gorge. It was built for Sir Julius Drewe, a self made millionaire, on land once owned by his Norman ancestor, Drogo de Teigne. Surrounding this 20th century dream country home, lies an equally impressive garden - the highest in the Trust.

The square shape of the castle and the large rotund croquet lawn exemplifies the simple ethos of the architect, Lutyens, of "circles and squares". From spring bulbs in the formal garden, the rhododendron garden, the stunning herbaceous borders, the rose garden and the winter garden there is colour and interest here all year round.
