Tenby Museum & Art Gallery is run by an experienced team with an impressive accumulated knowledge of the town's and the region's history, geology and archaeology. The oldest independently run museum in Wales, it has been serving the community since 1878, when it was founded by a self-appointed committee of local retired professional gentlemen including amateur naturalists and archaeologists, with the primary aim of displaying local collections of natural history, geology and archaeology. The three floors tell a local story that starts in prehistoric times and follows through to modern times, with special exhibitions on topics such as Tenby Harbour and the local lifeboats. There are two art galleries: the Wilfred Harrison Gallery features artists with local connections, including Augustus and Gwen John, David Jones and John Piper, while the New Gallery hosts changing exhibitions throughout the year. Other activities at Tenby Museum include a family history research facility, a year-round programme of educational events, talks and workshops, a gift shop and a small cafeteria.
