Maes yr Haf Restaurant

Since it was opened by David Kelly in the summer of 2007, Maes yr Haf has established itself as one of the finest places in the region for a meal or a holiday. For most of its life the 1940s property was a modest B&B house, sometime a shop and later a private residence, before being transformed into a top-class restaurant with rooms, a contemporary boutique hotel and restaurant in the heart of the lovely Gower Peninsula. It stands a short stroll from the beautiful Three Cliffs Bay and is centrally placed for the many other fine beaches of the South Gower coast. In the restaurant, the emphasis is on the best-quality fresh produce and for most of what goes into accomplished head chef Christos Georgakis's kitchen that means Welsh - local meat, local fish and shellfish, local fruit and vegetables. Almost everything, from the bread to the pasta, the pastries and the ice cream, is made in house. The restaurant itself is highly individual and eye-catching in design, with extensive use of rosewood and sapele creating a warm, inviting feeling of luxury. The fixed-price lunch menu (served from 12 to 2.30) and the à la carte evening menu (7 to 9.30) tempts with dishes that combine top-quality ingredients with cooking that shows classic skills and contemporary flair. Typical dishes might include laver- bread and home-cured bacon soufflé with a local cockle salad; grilled salsify with a poached egg, pink grapefruit hollandaise and a parmesan wafer; salmon with a leek & black pepper risotto and a crayfish bisque sauce; braised neck fillet of Welsh lamb; and, to finish, bread & butter pudding with an apricot glaze & Merlyn Welsh liqueur anglais. Local ales and cider, well-chosen wines, spirits and liqueurs and discreet, attentive service set the seal on a memorable meal. As well as lunch (roasts on Sunday) and dinner, Maes yr Haf is open for breakfast and afternoon tea/coffee with home-made bread and cakes and light meals. There's also a Ramblers Menu (12 to 7) with soup, sandwiches, pastries and hot and cold drinks, and residents can order a picnic pack for a day's sightseeing or a lazy day on the beach. The accommodation comprises a selection of luxurious en suite doubles, each with a distinctive design by Hannah Davies of Salt Design, and all with large, super-comfortable beds and a range of hi-tech amenities. A hospitality tray is provided, but full room service is also available. |
