A superb Victorian town house has been beautifully transformed into its current role as a top-quality family-run Bed & Breakfast earning 5 Stars from The AA and English Tourism Council. The building, which dates from 1887 and has recently been fully refurbished, stands on London Road between the A2050 and A290 on the northern side of Canterbury, close to Canterbury West railway station. Its position puts it within a gentle stroll of the city's almost endless attractions and makes it a great base for touring the surrounding area. The guest bedrooms, each with its own individual décor and furnishing, comprise a single, twin and a number of doubles. Some of the doubles are designated superior, with more space and four-poster beds. One or two extra beds can be added in these larger rooms to provide family accommodation. The rooms retain the style and original features of the late-Victorian era, creating a warm home-from-home atmosphere that combines with all the modern conveniences expected by today's discerning travellers. All the rooms have en suite bathrooms with luxury toiletries. Local produce is to the fore in the traditional English breakfasts, with Continental and lighter options, served in the dining room, which is home to a remarkable and treasured collection of Royal Family, Household, Toy and Tobacco memorabilia. The library, in addition to a wide range of books, has card game and board games for adults and children. The breakfast room opens to a sun terrace where in summer guests can while away an hour or two spotting the wildlife.Yorke Lodge has its own private off-street parking. Dogs can be accommodated by prior arrangement. The city of Canterbury has more to offer the visitor than almost anywhere in the land, including the Cathedral and other historic buildings, museums, theatres, a county cricket ground, restaurants, shops, walking tours and ghost tours. The coast, at Whitstable and Herne Bay, is a 15 or 20-minute drive away, the seaports and the Channel Tunnels 30 minutes away, and the main road network gives easy access to the castles, gardens and all the other attractions that make Kent such a marvellous place to visit. |
