The Lagan Lookout Visitor Centre provides an accessible and
informative venue to find out more about Belfast's
past and its rise into today's modern city. It provides a unique link that joins the
city's industrial past with its evolving future
and it tells that story through modern interactive sound and vision.
The location chosen for the Lagan Weir and Lookout is of great historical significance. It is
the original site of the ford that crossed the River Lagan. Visit the Lookout and find out about the
growth of Belfast over the last 300 years, from its beginnings as a trading port, following its rise
through Victorian times and the Industrial Revolution. You can see a display on the world famous,
RIMS Titanic built in Belfast and view the fantastic two metre replica of the ill fated ship. Visit "The
Big Fish" on Donegall Quay and discover a snapshot of Belfast, both past and present.
The Lagan Weir is central to the whole regeneration of the river and the surrounding area. A
major engineering achievement, this massive 214-million pound project provides a new set of lungs for
the river. The weir has five gates, which control water levels, ensuring that the mud flats are kept
covered. It also acts as a prevention against flooding.
Today the river is undergoing a resurgence to meet changing times. New businesses and new
housing developments are rising along its banks and new life is being breathed into its waters. Follow
the progress of the changing face of Belfast and capture impressive views of The Odyssey,
Belfast's millennium project, or the magnificent Waterfront Hall, situated on Lanyon Place.
The Lookout remains an excellent resource facility for school and college visits, especially
those studying geography, the environment and history. A resident Education Officer is always on hand
to provide specialist knowledge and assistance, to meet the needs of particular groups.
