Heage Windmill stands in a very striking position overlooking the village of Nether Heage. A Grade II* listed building, it is the only working, stone-towered windmill with six sails in England and the only working windmill in Derbyshire. The mill started grinding corn in 1797 and, prior to her restoration, was last worked by miller, Thomas Shore in 1919.The mill has much of her old wooden mechanism in place which drives one of her two pairs of millstones. In the basement, the interpretation centre tells a story of Heage Windmill. The adjacent kiln has been restored as a reception centre with toilets and a shop selling flour, souvenirs and refreshments. There is wheelchair access to the ground floor of the windmill, the interpretation centre and the reception centre. There is a large car park on site. |
